Creative Magic

The challenge/idea

It all started with the idea of learning something new. I always enjoy discovering new tools, skills, and ideas. I came across a fantastic cell animator and illustrator, Caroline Kjellberg, and followed her lesson on using Procreate. The main focus was to create an animation using mixed media, but I wanted to add some extra meaning. As creatives, we use our hands most of the time in our process, and it's always a matter of balance: the motion, colours, timing, shapes, and composition.

The process was relatively straightforward. I started by doing some sketches first. I had some ideas that didn't "survive" :)

The process

My next step was to take a picture of my hands, cut them from the image, and colour them in black and white. Then, why not create create a fake 3D effect with the movements of the hands?

I decided to use a photo of my hands along with some stock photography of cornflowers. You might wonder why I chose cornflowers. I am from Belarus, and this simple and beautiful flower symbolises my homeland. In addition to using cell animation elements, I've also decided to incorporate some vector graphics.

The most fun part was animating the Balancing shapes with the eye and cell animation. I would call it "the magic force" appearing when anyone starts creating.
